The concept of ‘elbow room’ explained by Daniel Dennett in Henry Plummer’s “The Experience of Architecture”. When the scale of a room is just right in relation to the user’s emotional needs, it lends a sense of both freedom and control — safety and play — simultaneously.
I’ve illustrated in the last slide my interpretation of ‘elbow room’ if applied across various dimensions, and how these may create layers of complexity and poetry, particularly in the context of urban experience.
